His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong has forwarded
to me a copy of the confidential despatch of June 12 which
he addressed to the Secretary of State for the Colonies and
which will doubtless have reached you from the Colonial
office.
As you will have gathered from my previous despatches
on the subject and the reports which I forwarded from His
Majesty's Consul General at Canton, the boycott against
the steamers of Messrs Butterfield and Swire was supposed
to have practically ceased and this appeare also to have
been the impression of Sir F.Lugard until the fact that
the British firm were entering into direct relations with
the Self Government Society was abruptly brought to his
knowledge.
My own information was derived exclusively from Hie
he Right Honourable,
Sir Edward Grey, Bart., K.P.
